Vintage 1980’s Pencil Reed Rattan Lounge Chairs Casa Bique Ltd—A Pair

Absolutely dynamite pair of large pencil reed rattan lounge chairs with inlaid marble accents, likely designed by Robert Marcius for Casa Bique Ltd circa early 1980’s (though they could possibly be Maitland-Smith)…..incredible statement chairs constructed entirely of thin “pencil reed” rattan, with a raised design atop the backrest….inlaid tessellated marble section on either side of the seat, spanning the area from the top of the armrest down to the bottom of the frame—this type of marble, called “tessellated” (which means “pattern of marble pieces fitted together without gaps or interruption”) has often been used by companies like Maitland-Smith, and Karl Springer—these companies produced handmade pieces in the same factory that Casa Bique had their manufacturing…..the quality is fantastic, and these chairs are very comfortable to boot…..they’re on casters, so they roll smoothly and easily…..the seats lift out, which makes for very easy reupholstering should you decide to go that route….the current fabric is nice, and is in very good shape, so they certainly don’t need to be redone, it just comes down to preference…..they’re in great condition overall, the only blemish is a couple dings along the bottom edge of the marble section (photo 9)….the dings really aren’t even visible with the chairs in a normal upright position—if you get down on the floor, or tip the chair back, you can see them—-they’re really quite minor, though, particularly considering the scale and just how dynamic the chairs are…..these are the chairs you build a space around…

Here’s a Christie’s auction listing from 2014 that attributes the chairs to Maitland-Smith….the chairs sold at auction for around $2850 usd in 2014, and they appear to be painted, and not as nice as the pair I’m offering–
