This exceptional and rare antique Victorian cast sterling silver dish has been realistically modelled in the form of a cradle/bassinet*.
The oval rounded body of the dish is embellished with details reproducing the woven bassinet vessel, incorporating a concealing elevated portion to one end.
The upper and lower rims are ornamented with paralleling rope twist decorated borders, incorporating suspended decorative rope twist handles and a plain scalloped insert replicating the bassinet’s fabric trim.
The anterior portion of the cradle bears a circular cartouche embellished with the contemporary engraved crest of between two wings, a heart crowned.
This Victorian silver dish is supported by four scrolling feet to the underside.
This versatile and rare example of antique silverware will have been specially commissioned to hold pins or other baby related items, however by virtue of its size this unusual vessel could be used for a multitude of functions.
NOTE: * A bassinet, bassinette, or cradle is typical a bed specifically crafted for babies younger than four months. Typically a cradle features a rocking function, whereas a bassinet bears fixed legs.
Condition
This antique dish is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The cast decoration is all very sharp and the engraved crest is very crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the vessel are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this sterling silver cradle basket.
