Pair 19th century French Napoleon III Period Bronze D’Or Rococo Candlesticks are a stunning work of the sculptor’s art rendered in ormolu to literally last for centuries! The elaborately naturalistic form of the Rococo movement has been captured, a style that caught the eye of Louis XV and has been popular ever since. The asymmetrical undulating form of each candlestick was inspired by the classic acanthus plume, floral garlands, shells, and of course the central figures on each ~ two adorable cherubs. One cherub is holding a nest in one arm with a bird in the other hand, while the other cherub is holding freshly picked wildflowers and marveling at the cluster of grapes in his other hand. The forms are very symbolic of youth, nature, the wonders of Spring and the joys of life. Each candlestick’s design includes a broad tripod base with lots of open areas within the sculpture as it would be in nature, culminating at the top with a fountain like effect, from which the bobeche, which is itself richly cast, has been mounted. Imagine the two surviving as a pair for the last 150 years!
