Feathered Stars are beautifully combined with Oak leaves in this quilt from the 1860s. While the Stars are all identical, the maker took liberties with the Oak leaves. Most are the same but she varied the Size and colors in several. In one applique, she omitted the variegated leaves. All of this makes the quilt a charming combination of elegant and slightly quirky.
It is nicely stitched with small diamonds throughout the body of the quilt and diagonal lines in the border. The swag border repeats the Oak leaves, The quilt has never been washed. There is very faint shadowing around parts of the border. This could most likely be evened out with washing but, to my eye, it is not necessary. It’s a matter of personal preference.
The quilt measures 90″ x 94″
