Mid 19th Century.
A fine woolwork picture of a American 22 gun frigate. The woolie is very large with the ship filling most of the wool. The three masted ship has 11 gun ports on the starboard side with two portholes at the stern and another at the bow. A Stars and Stripes flies from the mizzen mast with 29 visible stars. A large banner billows from the main mast- It is blue with thirteen stars with a long red and white tail.
The wool was created with a tight chain stitch. The quality of the wool is extraordinary- strong colour are seen through out. The sea is dark blue with regular white caps in various sizes created a rhythmic base. The hull is brown and the sails white. The ship is coming into land with a headland to the right with a lighthouse standing tall on the green landscape. The sky is complexly depicted with rolling browns to the top and clouds embroidered at various angles to create wonderful movement in the sky while red and yellow patches show through the clouds. Around the level of the tops of the masts is a band of blue sky.
