A Superb Pair of Massive Second Empire Gilt Bronze five light wall sconces, in the Louis XVl taste, each vase- shaped body applied with masks and garlands, the scrolling arms are ribbed and the drip pans are spiral fluted, later electrified, after the model by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (French, 1751–1843). These are unsigned but substantially indistinguishable from the originals.
The French Second Empire saw a revival of interest in the late 18th taste spearheaded by the Empress Eugenie who took a great interest in the style. Furniture and decorations of a quality equal or superior to the 18th century originals were made by Parisian craftsmen. Although these sconces are unsigned they are of the finest quality.
