Antique Chinese Peking Carpet Dating From 1870
Measuring 8′ x 13’6″ – 245 x 410 cm
Usually the wide plain outer border of Chinese carpets is blue or brown, but here it is a striking crimson. The central framing band, on a sand ground, shows a bold fret wave pattern while the more delicate inner stripe displays a T-fret. The relatively open sand ground shows an offset pattern of 17th century style navy blue round open full and half medallions with two confronting foliage dragon heads. Instead of the classic blue-and-white palette common to many Peking Revival carpets, this one adds the scarlet to create a more modern, nearly Art Deco effect. The drawing is precise and even the border corner resolutions are perfectly executed. Cotton foundation with a medium weave of asymmetric knots. Very good condition.
