Unusual to find an American example, as most are of English manufacture and quite ubiquitous. Of Charles Eastlake design, the open fretwork to the top and sides; the Fine figured walnut to the body and drawer front with highly carved handle; the Fine quality wood grain and patina throughout, make this an exceptional example of Americana. The emblem and logo to the mid front panel further enhance the desirability of this magazine rack and gives provenance to the “International Exhibition, Memorial Hall 1876”. This event was also referred to as the Philadelphia World’s Fair of 1876. The typewriter and telephone were new inventions introduced at this important exposition, which was host to 35 countries opening May 10 and running to November 10, 1876 in celebration of our nation’s 100th anniversary.

A canterbury such as this example would have been used for sheet music, papers, and documents, as well as for magazines and newspapers, in homes of the wealthy and was a definite symbol of upper society.

Dimensions: 35 1/2″ high x 19 1/2″ wide x 14 1/4″ deep

Provenance: Same family owned the piece from it’s original manufacture in 1876. Passed down in the family to California where I acquired it in a 1978 estate sale. It has been in my personal collection for 40 years.

Beurdeley, Paris. The Beurdeley family were a flourishing dynasty of three generations of fine quality cabinetmakers working from 1818-1895. The firm was particularly well known for its exceptional metalwork, most commonly basing their designs on important eighteenth century examples. Their mercurial gilding and hand chasing are often of such a high standard that it is difficult to distinguish them from late eighteenth century work. The founder of the dynasty Jean Beurdeley (1772-1853) was a Burgundian craftsman conscripted into the Napoleonic army. After hostilities ended in 1815 he settled in Paris opening a shop for curiosités and working as a latter day marchand mercier. Initially based on the rue Saint-Honoré, in 1840 Beurdeley moved to the famous Hanover Pavilion situated on the corner of rue Louis-Legrand and boulevard des Italiens, and the business was run by his only surviving son, Louis-Auguste-Alfred (1808-1882). This successful business, which had numerous official commissions including in 1853 the marriage coffer for the Empress Eugénie, was continued by Louis’ son, Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis (1847-1919). The business continued in its traditional style with very few variations until 1895. Alfred, along with the most famous artists of the period, took part in the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle, where he won the gold medal. Following on from this glory he went on to open a shop in New York. His participation in the 1883 Amsterdam Universal Exhibition drew even further attention to his work, and possibly as a result he was awarded the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest official mark of recognition. The incredible quality of each generations work ranked the firm of Beurdeley as pre-eminent amongst Parisian makers of meubles de luxe. Bibliography: Ledoux – Lebard, Denise. Beautifully carved from crown to apron, each features an intriguing and unique wire mesh instead of glass, which makes the doors lighter and adds a little bit of Country French charm. Each features a boldly gadrooned crown overlooking the casework, which is dominated by the two full length doors, each fitted on the top two thirds with the aforementioned wire mesh, framed by two tiers of hand-carved molding with subtle acanthus flourishes on the scrolls at the top. The mesh allows one to see the interior, which comes with two full width shelves each on fully adjustable mounts. Below the mesh each door has an exquisitely sculpted panel depicting baskets bursting with flowers and foliage in wonderful relief, surrounded by the same two-tiered molded framework as above. Both doors are flanked by rounded cornerposts carved from the crown to the feet with laurel bundles finished with acanthus flourishes at the base. The apron between is two tiered, with olive sprays above and below, which is set on a graceful contour and centered with an oval medallion carved with florets.

Oak
is a tree or shrub in the genus Quercus – Latin “oak tree” having approximately 600 extant species. Oak wood has a density of about 0.75 g/cm3, great strength and hardness, and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin content. It also has very appealing grain markings, particularly when quartersawn. Oak wood is very durable, easy to maintain and resistant to wear and tear which is why it can be easily handed to the next generations if taken well care of.

Oak wood virtually lasts forever and you can still admire oak furniture in museums and palaces even if it was made many centuries ago. Oak has been prized since the Middle Ages for use in interior panelling of prestigious buildings such as the debating chamber of the House of Commons in London and in the construction of fine furniture.
