Napoleon III table lamp
materials gilt bronze, onyx and cloisone enamel
Origin France circa 1860
electrified 220 w perfect condition.
The Napoleon III style had its heyday during the 1850s and 1880s. Emperor Napoleon wanted to emulate the lavishness and elegance of the First Empire. His wife, Empress Eugenia de Montijo, was attracted to the Louis XVI style, and she had her apartments furnished with furniture inspired by the latter style.
With the Second Empire style, tradition and modernity are mixed, reaching a very eclectic artistic style. That eclecticism will give this style its own air. Numerous buildings were built during this time, which we can still see today: The Opera Garnier in Paris, the Louvre Palace, Paris City Hall… The city of Paris was transformed giving way to the great Boulevards and squares.
