Circa 1875
The sailor’s woolwork depicts the port side view of four ships including an American ship under a cloudy sky. In the center is a British Royal Navy ship flying the White Ensign under steam which can be seen issuing from a black funnel.
In the foreground is a small vessel, also under steam and flying the Red Ensign coming along side it. In the background is another British ship with the Red Ensign but with a white hull. In the background to the right is an American ship, flying the Stars and Stripes, turning away and sailing under full sail out to sea.
