Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845 and is renowned as one of England’s finest joinery shops, as well as top restorers of antique furniture which they have also ‘modernised’ for contemporary use, but have retained the spirit and fine craftsmanship of the creators of the original piece. This piece of furniture is typical of the creation of a workshop that preferred older motifs.
This exceptionally high-quality sideboard is made of solid oak in a Gothic style, hand-carved in fine detail. The lower part consists of a profiled chest of drawers with four solid doors and three drawers – the middle drawer is signed – see photo. The upper part is made up of a richly carved back with a mirror which has faceted edges and a pair of projecting shelves on turned legs with lion head tops.
Condition: excellent, no wormholes, locks are functional – new keys for unification are finished. For transport and moving, the top part can be removed – it is a very heavy and sturdy piece. Date: around 1860. Provenance: England – Edwards & Roberts workshops
