Japanese Antique Choba Tansu (Merchant Chest) Meiji Era
Antique Choba – Tansu (merchant’s chest) from the Tohoku area of Northern Japan circa 1868-1912. Made with Kiri (Paulownia) wood front and Sugi (Cryptomeria) wood frame and interior. There are eight exterior drawers, a compartment with sliding panels, all with dramatic round lock plates. Iron hardware also includes Warabite-loop shaped drawer pulls. Sliding doors hide the safe box with lock, there are two small drawers. Merchant chests were used by business owners for both function and marketing. For function, it served to store business papers, documents, valuables, books, stationery and sometimes calligraphy brushes, inkstone and inksticks. For marketing, it was displayed in a prominent part of the store so that customers would visually think that the business was established and successful to afford such a fancy and impressive form of furniture.
